October Safety Awareness: Fire Prevention, Hearing Protection & Your Chance to Win

Safety starts with awareness. This October, TTUHSC Facilities & Safety Services is focusing on two important topics that can help prevent injuries, protect property, and support a safer workplace for everyone: Fire Prevention and National Protect Your Hearing Month.

By taking a few moments to review this month's safety information, you can strengthen your knowledge and help create a safer environment for colleagues, students, patients, and visitors across our campuses.

Fire Prevention: Every Action Counts

Fires can develop quickly, but many workplace fires are preventable. Recognizing potential hazards and taking action before an emergency occurs can make a significant difference.

Here are a few simple ways to reduce fire risks:

  • Practice electrical safety by avoiding overloaded outlets and damaged cords or equipment.
  • Keep exits, hallways, stairwells, and emergency equipment clear and accessible.
  • Maintain good housekeeping by removing unnecessary clutter and combustible materials.
  • Never prop open designated fire doors.
  • Know your evacuation route and leave immediately when a fire alarm sounds. Use the nearest safe exit and avoid elevators.
  • Report fire hazards and unsafe conditions promptly.

Prevent fires. Protect people. Save lives.

National Protect Your Hearing Month

Hearing loss caused by repeated exposure to loud noise can occur gradually and often permanently. The good news is that it is also preventable.

Help protect your hearing by:

  • Being aware of loud equipment, activities, and work environments.
  • Wearing appropriate hearing protection when required.
  • Limiting the amount of time spent around excessive noise whenever possible.
  • Watching for warning signs such as ringing in the ears, muffled hearing, or difficulty understanding conversations.
  • Reporting concerns about excessive workplace noise and asking questions about proper hearing protection.

Protect today. Hear tomorrow.
